난청, 와우 삽입 치료와 뇌막염, Hearing difficulty, Cochlear implantation treatments and Meningitis

와우는 청각의 기본 기관이고 내이에 속한다.
보청기로 치료되지 않는 감각 신경성 난청이 와우 이식치료로 어느 정도 회복될 수 있다.
클래리온 와우 자극기(Clarion cochlear stimulator)는 요즘 가장 많이 쓰는 인공 와우 자극기이다.
인공 와우 자극기를 한쪽에 삽입하는 것이 보통이다.
클래리온 와우 자극기를 삽입하고 유지하는데 소요되는 의료비용은 상당하다.
인공 와우 자극기를 이식한 후 뇌막염, 일시적 안면 신경 마비, 현운증 등 합병증이 생길 수 있다.
와우 와우 자극기를 이식 받은 후 폐렴 연쇄상 구균성 뇌막염에 걸릴 수 있다.
그래서 폐렴연쇄상구균 감염병 백신으로 예방 접종을 받아야 한다.

와우 장치에는 언어 처리프로그램 장치, 마이크로폰, 송화기, 수화기 장치 등 여러 부분이 있고 이 장치를 통해 들어온 말이 전극 배열을 통해 청신경으로 전달된다.

감각신경 이상으로 생기는 극심한 농아 영아들이 와우 장치치료를 받은 결과 그들이 들을 수 있었다(출처; NEJM Dec 6, 2007 p.2380).

The hearing difficulty, Cochlear implantation treatments and Meningitis

• The cochlea is the basic organ of hearing and belongs to the inner ear.

• Sensorineural hearing loss that is not treated with hearing aids can be restored to some extent with cochlear implantation.

• The Clarion cochlear stimulator is the most used cochlear stimulator these days.

• It is common to have a cochlear implant stimulator placed on one side.

• The medical cost of inserting and maintaining the Clarion cochlear stimulator is significant.

• Complications such as meningitis, temporary facial nerve paralysis, and vertigo may occur after cochlear implantation.

• Cochlear Streptococcal meningitis can occur after receiving a cochlear stimulator implant.

• So, you should be vaccinated with the Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine.
