어떤 종류의 약물이건 주사로 맞거나 경구로 섭취하거나 귓구멍을 통해 외이 속이나 중이 강 속에 넣거나, 또는 기도 속으로 흡입해 치료받을 때 약물에 의해서 청력장애가 생길 수 있다.
약물치료를 받는 중, 약물의 종류에 따라 난청이나 귀머거리가 더 잘 생길 수 있는 약물이 있다. [부모도 반의사가 되어야 한다-소아가정간호백과]-제 15권 소아청소년 알레르기 및 면역질환-약물 부작용 참조.
과량의 아스피린으로 치료 받을 때 귀속에서 이상한 소리가 날 수 있다.
스트렙토마이신, 카나마이신, 젠타마이신, 또는 토브라마이신 등과 그 외 다른 여러 종류의 항생제 치료를 받을 때 내이 청신경이 손상되어 난청이 생길 수 있고 귀머거리가 될 수 있다.
말을 할 줄 모르는 영유아들에게 있는 어떤 병을 어떤 종류의 약물로 치료할 때 영유아가 귀를 자주 비빈다든지 갑자기 말이나 소리를 잘 알아듣지 못할 때는 약물 난청이 생기는지 의심해 본다.
말을 할 줄 아는 아이들의 어떤 병을 약물로 치료할 때 귀에서 이상한 소리가 난다든지 소리가 잘 안 들린다고 하면 약물 치료를 즉시 중단하고 의사에게 문의해야 한다.
